LINEAR TRANSFORMERS
A linear transformer usually has 3 toroidal coils, the primary one in the center, flanked by 2 secondary coils to its sides. A ferro-magnetic rod is going through all 3 coils.

As the core moves, these mutual inductances change, causing the voltages induced in the secondaries to change It is used to precisely measure movements or displacements (of whatever is attached to the rod) as the output voltage on the secondary coil changes with such movement.
